Cheryl Kemeny
Artistic Director, Co-Founder, President, Musical Director, Playwright/Composer-in-residence, Director

Cheryl Kemeny’s career spans over 40 years as a professional singer, musician, writer/composer and teacher.  Having directed or musically directed over 140 different productions at Crystal Theatre and elsewhere, Ms. Kemeny has also written/co-written more than 30 musicals-many of them available through Crystal Theatre Publishing and currently being performed by community/children’s theatre groups form Calgary, Canada to Seoul, South Korea and throughout the USA.  Starting at age 14 as a singer/drummer with the Alexander Kemeny Hungarian Orchestra, Ms. Kemeny spent 11 years touring the world as half of the Kemeny Sisters Duo performing from NYC, Atlantic City and Montreal all the way to Japan, South Korea and the Philippines and performing in/directing 3 USO/DOD Tours of the Far East, Mediterranean and Far North (Canada/Greenland).  Having received a Bachelor of Music in Voice and Opera from Hartt College of Music, Ms. Kemeny continued her education in Budapest, Hungary at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music doing 4 years of post-graduate work in voice there, then proceeding to do freelance work in Munich singing with the Bayerische Rundfunk Chor under conductor Rafael Kubelik.  She received her “Alternate Route to Certification” at Wesleyan college in 1991 and the 1998 Celebrate Women Award for her contributions to the community.

In 1987, Ms. Kemeny formed Crystal Theatre under the auspices of the Norwalk Parks & Recreation Department along with her fellow co-founders.  Her personal goal was to train performing artists by stressing the following three principles:  “1.) show up 2.) devote your full attention 3.) develop your natural ability.”  Without one and two, three (natural ability) is meaningless.  Twenty-five years and multiple awards later, these principles are still valid.
